The difference between thesis writing and fiction writing:

Half a thesis chapter = 13,627 words.
An entire short story = c. 2,750 words. 3,500 words if it’s a long one.

<Edit to add: Clearly I was tired when I wrote this yesterday! I was thinking about what half a short story would be, but wrote "an entire short story" for dramatic effect… brain and fingers didn’t sort themselves out before this post went up… D’oh!>
